Darkness within 2: Dark Lineage and Amnesia: The dark Descent ...

Both are very similar (lantern-thingy and the overal creepyness of the game).

a few months ago i thought it was one and the same game at first glance ...

Overall i like Amnesia better , but i must admit that the dynamic light rendering in DL2 looks better.

Anyways , judge for youreself :

I played DW2's demo, not scary at all with so many bugs all around, puzzles full of pixel hunting, and terrible writing.
I think the shadows being cast off of the lantern's wires look absolutely horrible, as a lantern in real life does not cast shadows like that.
Darkness Within 2 is sucky compared to Amnesia. But it's not horrible.

This might be a bit "throwing it out there", but my gamedev team is working on a first-person horror adventure: http://www.embracethedarkness.co.cc

We're also releasing a small game in the same vein for free early 2011 (called "project PHASMA" for now).

Media is very scarse and there's only around 4 pics for a prototype from Embrace the Darkness, and a Video Production Diary for project PHASMA. But they might be something you'd like to play when they're out. Smile
I think Scratches came very close to creating the same type of atmosphere, but it is a classic point and click adventure game, not true 3D.

This one due out next year (from the Scratches dev team) looks promising.

I didn't realize there are so many games so similar. Still, none I've seen so far comes close to Amnesia. Big Grin

What I would recommend is a game that was only recently replaced by Amnesia for my "scariest game ever" choice: System Shock 2. The only thing it has in common is the general horror atmosphere and sense of loneliness paired with a first-person perspective. Otherwise, it's very different.

A sci-fi RPG set on a broken space ship, trillions of miles from earth. There is combat, a much more complex RPG system... but, like all the games that are doing horror well, it's the amazing sound design that does the job. It has those moments where you stand in front of a door, hearing some scary voices on the other side and you just can't walk through it. Very recommendable.

Intro

Vid with high-res mods installed (it's a 1999 game!).

Looks like shit. Didn't even seem scary at all. The animation sucks, and makes it look like a puppet show, and the voice acting is horrible.

Lol @ this post. How can you say it looks like shit if all you've seen was a teaser video? Scratches was amazing, so I have no doubts this game will be creepy as well. I can't wait!
