It is much more difficult to pirate MMOs, and much easier to go after people who set up pirated servers than people just playing a single player offline in their house.
I'll be honest and say that I pirated the game.
Nevertheless I still wanted to support the developers after all, so later on, when I was about 80% through the game, I saw a 50% off package for Amnesia+Penumbra on gamersgate advertised on their facebook site and I instantly bought it with no hesitation.

Thanks again for such an awesome game, and I'll surely be preordering your next game.

On Piracy in general:
All offline games are easily pirated unfortunately. Could possibly be circumvented by forcing logging in at the server and then be allowed to play it offline.

When it comes to this point, it is not going long to take that offline games have monthly fees....

I don't see this happening anytime soon. Especially not with the kind of singleplayer-gameplay we get from the major companies these days.
Yes, MMOs have done it for a while, and yes, even some normal multiplayer games have done it as well. But paying monthly for a singleplayer game, would require a constant stream of new features.
That is being done, but in the form of add-ons which you buy seperately.

Game rental services like Gametap, Gamefly and others I'm sure I'm forgetting already are effectively a monthly fee for access to singleplayer games.
I believe that anyone who pirates a game is a thief. It hurts the developers and the video game industry in general.

Aren't you clever. Big Grin
Perhaps you didn't read the whole thread.
Since this discussion has been slightly brought to Online/Offline gameplay:

Wouldn't it be interesting to play Amnesia in multiplayer (with 2 players in total)?

Find a place with your buddy to hide in from zombies, or scenarios where one attracts a zombie while the other does some tasks, or some complex physical puzzles that require 2 players, etc...

Interesting for sure. But not scary.

I'm certain Frictional could find a way to make co-op scary.
