From what I can see, and I cannot see much, it's just to do with collision making Daniel go a substantial amount faster in a downward position so that he either goes through the wall or floor at such a fast speed. The game computes his position, which places him outside of the map.
Can't do much about it since it requires a rewrite of the physics and collision engine.

You can accomplish a similar task by holding the shovel object in a particular position while standing near a wall.
