So when I unwittingly killed Amabel I threw a dead worm and some spider eggs on her body for no particular reason.

Well, possibly. I, myself, tried cremating Howard with a flare...which means that there's probably something wrong with both of us.
I just dropped that crate again to make sure she was dead. You can never be too careful while zombies are on the loose.
I never payed much attention to howard, although I did try dancing on his body
