Being a Pianist, I can fully enjoy music as much as the next guy.

Though I was rather disappointed that there wasn't an option to turn off music. I hated that music told me when something bad was happening. I'd much rather have the entire castle eerie and quiet, despite ambient noises, and turn around and see a monster noticed me, without the screechy music. That would intensify the experience even more for me.

Heck, I even played the game deaf once. (No sound). Let's just say I'll never do that again.

Has anyone thought of music being an option to turn off? And would you try it out?
Probably it would be nice as an option, but I would not use it. It would be too much for me to hear monster breathing behind and have no other warning than just the sound of footsteps, which the castle is full of. It would make the game scarier, but for me it's scary enough as it is. I'm on my second play-through, and, as lots of people already said, it's almost as terrifying and hard as the first time.
On the other hand, music helps to build up tension in frightening locations like the wine cellar or the refinery. Turning it off might take some of the horror away.
the music helps on the immersion, but i aggree that some (some) sounds just help you too much.
should be nice an option to take out these sounds.

Well, i don't know but you could try to remove the sounds you want directly from the amnesia directory... i would not try it though.
un like most first person games the music in this helps make the game what it is. i think turning it off might ruin it
The music does give away alot of clues though. It might be interesting to try a musicless playtrough.
Isn't there something in the config-files about music volumes?
The music does quite a good job at keeping you at constant high panic level.

For example at the waterlurker part when you miss a jump to a box, land in the water and are desperately trying to get onto the fricking box while you hear the lurker getting closer and closer while the horrifying music plays.
What if you replace the game music sound files with blank MP3s?
Here's how to play Amnesia without music

- Go to the main folder where you installed Amnesia
(for example in steam: Steam\SteamApps\common\amnesia the dark descent)
- open the resource.cfg
- find the line: "<Directory Path="/music" AddSubDirs="true" />"
- change it to "<Directory Path="/IDONTWANTNOMUSICINTHISGAME" AddSubDirs="true" />"
- save resource.cfg
- boot the game
- enjoy music less Amnesia
- make the DEVS cry for wasting alot of work in the music Tongue

if you want music back, change it to /music again

Give it a try and tell us if it's really scarier without music

By the way, i think the "monster chasing you" music is not at the music folder, it is actually at the sounds/ui folder and its called "terror meter" or whatever, so you can backup the file and replace it with a blank ogg.

edit: i attached a blank .ogg below. Just put in your Amnesia/redist/sounds/ui folder. Don't forget to make a backup of the original file.
I gave it a try myself, and it was indeed a bit dull :p
It was interesting though since you did pay more attention to ambiance
