Gosh!

SRSLY, mods, make a sticky thread that explains it with CAPITAL LETTERS:
THERE WILL BE NO AMNESIA 2! THAT'S THE FRIKKIN OFFICIAL STATEMENT!
Even if the OP incorrectly thinks it might be made, this thread is about what it could be about, not whether it will be made.

"2nd of July, 1839

I received a letter today from the Algerian Governor's office disclosing the fate of Herbert's expedition. About a week after my departure Abdullah, one of the men traveling with us returned from the desert. He was badly injured, as if maimed by a lion. The man rambled, deliriously, about the expedition being attacked by something horrible. The French quickly dispatched a search party to look for the expedition. After searching for days they found the camp abandoned, without any traces of Herbert or his men."

I think it's pretty clear Herbert and his group are dead.

no, missing, therefore you are wrong.
The narrative strongly implies they have been massacred; it is possible but very unlikely they are alive.

If that's what you want to think, to each their own

HollowLeviathan stated that there is a chance they are alive and I guess I can agree, but to an extent. The fact that they were located in the desert where survival with limited supplies [I say limited since they're most likely no where near the camp, which means the supplies they once had at hand are now unattainable to them] is slim to none. Also, if a "rescue team" was unable to find them and no notifications have been given to those close to the Professor for 3-4 months about a change in his whereabouts it's safe to say that if the Shadow didn't kill Herbert and his men the desert did.

But that's just me :q
