I liked the story and modern state of Penumbra though I think Amnesia was scarier, in my opinion story is more important then scare lol but they focus more on scare. All I care is that one of the next horror games they make is modern so I can get more ideas...:-]

I liked both settings, so I'd be happy with either general theme.
