When I pick up the page that triggers the memory of the blue light, I can see the subtitles and hear his voice, but the light does not appear. The screen just stays black and doesn't do anything. It allows me to pause and quit, so its not frozen, but that is all I can do at this point. I have an intel graphics card, which I have noticed a lot of complaints about on other threads, but I have been able to play up until this point, so I don't think that my graphics card is the problem.
what Intel card exactly? Attach us here the file HPL.log found under Documents\Amnesia\Main folder.

He asks for graphic card, not for the CPU.
Also posting your hpl.log will help us.

yeah i know. sorry, i read it wrong.
Did you update the game in the middle of playthrough? Because it seems like that and loading an earlier save might solve it.

No I didn't. In fact, I went through 2 times up to that point and both times it didn't load. I've tried a lot of different graphics options and it still hasn't worked. I saved before I picked up the paper so that I could try different options.
Isn't that at the begging of the game? If it is do the following, it should help. Uninstall the game, delete the Amnesia folder from Program Files, from Documents and from C:\Users\-Your-User-Name-\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files.Reinstall the game and before starting it make sure it is updated to v1.2. Start the game again from the begging and see if anything changes.

If that doesn't work then it should be a graphics problem. Maybe the driver should be reinstalled.
Temporary lower all the graphics settings for the game, then load an earlier save and play through this part where you get "stuck in black", that should fix it. Then when you have played through that sequence, you can set the graphics setting back to what you had previously.
