"'Call of Duty' Sets Sights on a Fee"

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424...TopStories

For those of you who don't want to read this, the "hyper realistic combat simulator" (jesus that is laugh worthy) MW3 now wants to charge extra for an "Elite" subscription service to get players access to map packs, ability to view K/D and other stats, have facebook, and a few other ideas.

What are some of your opinions on it? I personally think it's absolute bullshit and if they get away with this there isn't going to be much creativity in the market and will be nothing but overpriced garbage cash cows that will crash the industry.

Sounds like another incredibly bad idea to me. Is it just me or has the AAA games industry been making a lot of stupid decisions lately?

I'm surprised it's taken Kottick so long to finally put a subscription service on COD. He's always said he'd like to do it, and here it is. Screw Activision and cod anyway. Never bought mw2 or blops.

The ironic thing is that Bulletstorm was basically the same thing with more explosions and a brighter color scheme. Smile

Oh my god. To view a K/D Ratio? I think this is also absolute bullshit.

They're just following the money. The money seems to be leading them to making short term gains, and in the long run ruining the video game industry by others attempting to copy their success. Might be a fallout someday, just like the US banks, and Kotick will ride off into the sunset with another industry he fucked up (Kotick was the CEO of 4kids entertainment, the American anime company that changed things in shows such as Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh (such as Brock serving riceballs, but the English version calls them donuts).

Hopefully Frictionalgames has enough money to hire a few more people and actually get another great project out to us.

It's interesting that Activision is taking CoD into the freemium model at the same time as most MMOs are going into the F2P cash-shop direction, while World of Warcraft stays fully subscription based while also introducing a cash shop.

CoD will probably be able to implement this model, just as WoW is one of the few MMOs that has pulled off their sub-only model. I think it's a case where only the top dogs will have this luxury, while the rest of the pack will maintain the conventional release+DLC/expansion model.
