Search ModDB. Most every custom story out there has a registered ModDB page, so you can get a list of quite a few to download and try. Then decide for yourself!

Now "joke maps" consist of screaming naked men flying at you at an alarming rate. Aside from that, it had a lot more effort put into it than all of today's custom stories do. Nowadays, you'll be lucky if you play a map with more than 30 minutes worth of work put into it. And don't even get me started on the "story lines" where (at least) 70% of them when you "wake up and have no clue who you are/what you're doing/where you are". Honestly, everything good that can be done with this engine has already been done.
