Without the openAL fix, my sound was stuttering, and the game was freezing. With the fix, I got rid of the stutter, and the freezes, but music was wrong. I get very high pitch noise in the background which is quite disturbing, so I tried installing all required libs from the repository (Ubuntu feisty) and running the demo binary directly (to get my libs used) and it fixed all sound issues.
I know openAL is a *****, so just saying this to help anyone who has similar problems (note: you must have quite recent distro or your libs will be even worse, get the list of requirements with "ldd ./penumbra[demo].bin").
