Penumbra: The Email - darkely - 06-13-2012

Notice: parts in RED are update parts...

I am not sure how many of you remember this thread I made (link: http://www.frictionalgames.com/forum/thread-12644-post-111967.html#pid111967) but it was an announcement for my first story unfortunately I took in more then I could possibly handle...

Now I'm back with a scaled back I've mentioned it before and got someone shot down... however I am making a ending for Penumbra. Why? because I feel the ending left way too much out and I want to fix that... however since this is a different engine (and from what I know it is pretty much impossible to make a custom story for Penumbra) I am making the sequel for Penumbra [on Amnesia].

Here are some things that I am not going to do...
  • I am going to need to make Amnesia look like Penumbra so this will be considered a total conversion... however I am not going to steal from Penumbra (copy and paste (or convert)) I am going to make my own.
  • Be unoriginal (read the next sentence) - ok this sounds like a double edged sword I know... but what I mean by this is I am going to try to put a twist on the look and feel of the game.
Here are some things I am going to do...
  • Make my own content which will hopefully give the feel of Penumbra. This will be hard... but I will try.
  • Find voice actors... this will be discussed later...
Why is this different from last time (my last creation)?
  • I have had more experience with custom stories (making them mainly).
  • I am an ok artist... I think so any way.
Story (in progress): Your name is Oliver Lewis. The events of Penumbra occurred only hours earlier. After waking up in your bedroom you go to eat breakfast and eat then you go to your computer and read Philip's message...

Philip Wrote:"Will you do this for me?" it asked, and I said that I would.

I promised the hive that I would contact someone I could trust, that I would have them destroy all the evidence of this place, just as my father had promised himself. I, however, will not make the same mistakes my father made – you now understand the truth of the events that lead me here, and the immeasurable importance of my words. Armed with this knowledge, you must have the strength to do that which I could not.

The Tuurngait was quite correct – we humans are dangerous, headless heard, but intelligent individuals. The members of this facility sought to reveal and control the Tuurngait, and the Tuurngait turned to me for salvation. The hive ran its tests on me – and I jumped through its hoops like the monkey it took me for.

But I am no monkey.
"Will you do this for me?" it asked, and I said that I would.

I promised the hive that I would contact someone I could trust, that I would have them destroy all the evidence of this place, just as my father had promised himself. I, however, will not make the same mistakes my father made – you now understand the truth of the events that lead me here, and the immeasurable importance of my words. The members of this facility sought to reveal and control the Tuurngait, and the Tuurngait turned to me for salvation. The hive ran its tests on me – and I jumped through its hoops like the monkey it took me for.

But I am no monkey.

The Tuurngait was right – I am entirely unlike it: I had more in common with Clarence.

I promised I would send this email to you. I promised I would ask that you keep all humans from this place – for the sake of the Tuurngait, and for the human race. I lied.

If we are lucky, then by the time you read this, I will be dead.

If fate frowns, we all perish.

The North-Western Mine is located at reference N81.6914, W58.3154.

Kill them.

Kill them all.

There is one thing I am worried about though...

Quote:Complete copying would be illegal; but it seems like that is not your question.
Penumbra
levels are made in Blender as full 3D models, and to recreate them in
Amnesia one would need to remodel & texture them. I don't think
anyone would undertake such a large project for an illegal act.
Quote:
Quote:If
it's not for sale and a CS by the same company, why is it illegal? I'm
sure he wouldn't sell it, THEN it would be illegal. Just saying
basically, make Penumbra as a CS (TC) for Amnesia as Amnesia has much
better mechanics. I mean... People already import all the models and
whatnot, it'd just basically be like compiling them all in one campaign.

Black Mesa is another story. It is approved and sometimes supported by Valve themselves.
However,
remake of Penumbra would cause a lot of problems. Firstly, voice acting
and music part cannot be re-done, or if it were to be re-done, it
wouldn't be as good as original was. So, it'd likely to cause some bad
reputation of original Penumbra games in public, thus affecting the
sales.

If it were to be better than Penumbra, then no-one would buy Penumbra but only buy Amnesia and play this re-make for free.

Frictional
Games usually takes an attitude where they don't give specific
permission, nor take action against it. So it is unlikely that they
would take legal action against this project, however it's still not
legal (considering all assets in Penumbra are STILL copyrighted property
of Frictional Games) and not taking any legal action doesn't change
that fact.

Either way, this is a still born project to me.

I'm worried about the above and more importantly doubters... I get confused when people tell me great job then the next person tells me f*ck off and stop making it (or the polite equivalent).

Ok... well first are you guy or girl? (sorry had to ask). I mainly need you to do shouting when he is in pain...

So in total...
  • Shouting pain (when he takes damage)
  • Script reading
  • Talking to himself (mainly this occurs in the beginning).

RE: Penumbra: The Email - kartanonperuna - 06-13-2012

And yeah I can do all those.

RE: Penumbra: The Email - Mathiasz - 06-14-2012

I am a composer and I'd love to compose music for your story.
I can compose ambient, themes or whatever you'd like to have in your story.

Below this text, there is a link to some of my current compositions.
If you're interested, please send me a personal message here at the forums.

Thank you!

1. How important is voice acting to you?
2. Do you want easter eggs implemented?
3. Any thing you think I should add?
4. Feedback?

1.Voice acting is kinda important, just don't over do it like Tenebris Lake (ie voice acting for interacting with doors). Just add it for necessary parts (cutscenes, flashbacks, intro perhaps?)

2. Only subtle easter eggs, like hints towards other games/external references. Nothing very obvious that will distract the player/ break immersion for them.

3. Make new characters; I think Philip has spent enough time in the Greenland Mines Tongue

4. This series has ultimately been finished; even before Requiem was released. You'll have to do something pretty interesting to get people excited/interested in it.

I can voice act for you too, if you have another character I guess. I'm a 17 year old deep voice male but I can change my voice pretty well.
