Howard probably asked from someone to close him inside that room.
After talking with the Tuurngait (how the hell could he do that??!?!?), he wanted to die (the Tuurngait said "He was too weak").
Probably a ciyanide capsule...
back on the subject, Philip may be a scared naive human being or a selfish man.
At first with the tongueless doctor Philip DID hear someone behind that door...but if I'm not wrong he couldn't open the door, and the toungeless dude was too scared to open it (heh, a misunderstood).
Amabel has glitchs so I'm not going to talk about it.

btw, did you notice that Philip never speaked in-game?
He couldn't talk to Red, to Clarence and to some survivors...

Actually maybe Amabel attacked us. I mean she saw how infected we were and that we obviouslet regarded her as an enemy, maybe thats why she can hurt us. It's a good retcon anyway

I still think she doesn't attempt to hurt Philip at all and that the pain Philip feels is just another of Clarence's illusions, which can kill Philip only because he think they can.
