Help Unwrapping a Curved model - Rapture - 08-26-2013

Unwrapping models a lot of times still doesn't make much sense to me, even if your suppose to unwrap like it like an animal skin or clothing materials.

I can't find much tutorials on this type of model I'm doing, everything seems to be mostly of characters with a few oddballs like this.

(1) Top view, the UV's are ok.

(2) Bottom view.

(3) Wire-frame mode.

(4) UVs.

(5) So any tips on how to actually unwrap the darn model?

(6) And if this was the best that you could possibly do, how would I go around texturing say a line of bricks around where it curves (Top side) properly?

If I was just to take a seamless repeating brick texture and apply it, it would warp really funky around it atm.

I'm not a UV map pro (in fact I'm quite lame) but you could try unwrapping the model all as a whole:

The suitor has all his model unwrapped in a single island, except for the hands and chains, which take up lots of space: Try unwrapping it as a single island (with it's seams, of course) as it usually gives me a good result.

Use this for "troublesome" unwraps. It's free to try - redownloads can be made too.

Get yourself 3D's max and use the peltmapping tool, all you need.

Or, go get a plugin for maya called Roadkill.

RE: Help Unwrapping a Curved model - Statyk - 08-29-2013

RoadKill is beautiful, especially for Maya-specific users like myself. I use it for pretty much all of my unwrapping, organic or inorganic, it works great for both.

Download plug-in can be found here. It works for 3DS Max as well, I believe, but like Traggey said, I think 3DS Max already has a pelt tool similar to what Roadkill does. Whereas Maya doesn't have one by default. (not sure about newer versions since 2012)

I'm not sure if this gives more options than just roadkill, but I like the interface.

It calls stuff from roadkill.

Roadkill is great, really quick and easy unwrapping. I have the full plugin but I can't get it to work with Maya... The free version does the job nicely too but it would be nice to have those extra features and have them work all in one program.

RE: Help Unwrapping a Curved model - PutraenusAlivius - 08-31-2013

The man uses Blender and 3 people recommend a Maya tool and one guy recommends getting 3DS Max.

Logic.

RE: Help Unwrapping a Curved model - Rapture - 08-31-2013

^
I shoulda been specific about that from the start, I didn't show anything that labeled it 100% Blender...

I need to try out Acies tool, took a look at it and I decided to let it wait (Why do they like to use such simplistic interfaces). And I got busy anyways, so I'm gonna practice it this weekend.

RE: Help Unwrapping a Curved model - Acies - 08-31-2013

It's easy. Use whatever I said (ahem, disregarding the fact that Traggey is far better than me at 3D modeling. Traggey is a max lover though, so unless you can extract AN ACTUAL OBJECTIVE OPINION = MEANING HE CAN SUPPORT HIS MAX-LOVER-FACTS-TO-A-CONCLUSION (I love you still Traggey)) Basically what Traggey said.

Traggey's good at what he does, but he loves 3d's max to death ~

Ps. Sorry. Drunk.
