I am all for paid mods, it is completely optional and if the mod creator believes the mod is high quality enough to charge for he/she should be able to, look at market places like TF2 and DOTA, modders love that environment and they can make a buck or two from sales.
Yes, it will be exploited in all kinds of ways and we just need to give it time to cool down and iron out the wrinkles.
But ultimately, I think this will create a better environment for modders in the future. The free mods will not go away, we will simply be able to expect higher quality mods from high-profile modders that can actually make money from what they do.

I can see that. If the mod is worth the price, it's also worth considering ^_^

I think that paid mods can actually bring even more awesome modders to Skyrim. I mean, there is a lot of talented guys out there that are also looking for some source of profit, so now they can earn money while selling their stuff to people. Though it's annoying when people shamelessly steal mods from i.e Nexus Mods and upload as their own at workshop, and then want players to pay for them.

But mods have always been awesome, and up until now they've been driven by reputation and respect, something that will always give better results than money ever will. If someone aspires to achieve something, they'll get farther than someone who does it for money. The lust will bring out the dark side, because who would intentionally make crappy mods if they get nothing out of it?
I love the concept that modders earn respect and honor amongst the community. You'll get more loyal fans that way.

Surprise surprise, Valve has removed the payment feature from Steam Workshop:

I think they're right that starting doing this in the skyrim community, was not the best idea. It'd be better to do this in a valve community.

@FlawlessHappiness: It would definitely be interesting to see how this would work out within different audiences.

I was afraid of change, man. The ui was spooky and I knew I would have to re-learn a lot. Being eased into it by an excellent teacher really made things painless.
I believed in you =[
