It was probably not installed correctly. The .exe doesn't seem to be in the same place as the .dll file.

Flawless is right. This error happens when the install directory was not set correctly. If you'd like some instructions on how to re-install it in the right place, you'll find them here.

Just because of my curiosity: What's the reason for this mod to come bundled with installer? It's a great piece of work, by the way. One of the best!

It's because of the way it uses a modified executable to work. It has an installer because people need to accept the licence if they wish to play. It's like an extra validation step.

So I completely uninstalled and reinstalled following the instructions on that link exactly, yet I'm still getting the missing .dll file.
Just to verify, this is the proper location to select for installation, yes? I have the non-Steam version.

It is the proper place, but perhaps the installer is installing a folder into redist/, which is not the intended installation.
If you get the error about the missing .dll file, go to the folder where the .dll file is, copy everything in that folder, and put it in redist/. This should fix the issue, as Amnesia.exe is the one needing the .dll

I just did a search on my entire Amnesia - The Dark Descent folder for "SDL.dll" and it could not locate it. Yet I'm still able to play the original game? I updated the game to 1.3.1 already, so I don't think that's the issue...

Can you confirm that ATSD.exe is in the same folder as Amnesia.exe?
If not, what is the full path to ATSD.exe?

In my redist folder I have:
-DevIL.dll
-glew32.dll
-ILU.dll
-ILUT.dll
-zlibwapi.dll
And yes, ATSD.exe is in the same folder as Amnesia.exe (/redist)
Btw thank you for helping me with this problem; I've really been ripping my hair out about it because I can't seem to find any solutions, and I really want to finally dig into this mod.
