Ah! Haven't read "Shadow out of time" yet, but I drew the exact same referenence to the short story "The nameless city", also by Lovecraft =P.

The Choir area, the huge open room with large pillars and red mist, reminded me of the Lovecraft story "Rats in the walls" in which the inheritor of an old castle finds a passage from his cellar down into the ground, into a massive open cavern with buildings of strange architecture and other horrors. It's not exactly like that, but the huge open area reminded me of it. It's one of Lovecraft's best stories IMO.
