Doing so gives me tons of errors with other script functions. There must be something wrong with the way its layed out.

Has anyone got any idea on how to make text appear on the screen when interacting with an object, eg. door???? I'm not sure what script functions to use.

You have to make an area there, the exact type is 'examine'.
