Frictional Games still the best at horror? - Hotzenplotz - 02-12-2017

Hello, I hope that's the right forum here. I am a fan of Frictional Games and in my opinion they've always been the best developers around there. Penumbra was such an immersive horror experience. I haven't seen any scary games like this since Silent Hill. And with Amnesia they redefined the genre so that tons of other indie horror games got inspired and followed this way. But no other developer managed to clone Amnesia. Even Outlast which is extremely scary doesn't have the brillance that Frictional Games built up with their games. With SOMA they started to focus more on perfect narrative design and storytelling, which makes horror games even deeper compared to all these "run away from monster" games. But somehow I think SOMA was more beautiful than scary and when I look at upcoming games like Visage, Allison Road, The Conjuring House, Home Sweet Home, Call of Cthulhu, Asylum, Simulacrum, Lorelai and many other disturbing stuff I don't actually remember, then it seems like Frictional Games may could be no longer on the top of creating fear. They are the best narrative designers, but at time there emerge other games that looks to be more horror.

What do you think?

It's hard to say considering that SOMA wasn't 100% focused on pure horror.

I don't play many games, but I have watched a lot Youtube players play horror games. Games like Amnesia and Outlast are difficult to compare to one another, because each has something that makes them standout. For example Amnesia has the creepy atmosphere and sound affects that keep you on your toes. Outlast focuses running for your life awhile collecting evidence of what is occurring at the location.

In the end, depending on your game preference is the deciding factor.
