Depending on what graphics card you have this is solved by either updating the drivers for it, or lowering the shader quality in the game options. It could also be that you are not running the latest version of Overture, check support.frictionalgames.com for updates.

i got the game via steam so it should be up to date
how do i find out what my graphics card is and weather it needs updating
also what is the shader and why does it need lowering

RE: general penumbra overture problems - jens - 12-06-2010

shader is in the game options, access from the main menu of the game. lowering it one step could solve the error as it looks as if the card can't handle the color specular.

You can type dxdiag in the search programs/files or using the run.. command in the Windows start menu. this will bring up a DirextX Diagnostic Tool, the second tab called Display should show you what graphics card you have.

I have the same problem whenever I start with a fresh download of Penumbra (demo), messing around with the settings usually solves it and as that dude above my post said change the shader's quality.

You definitely have weed stuck in you're graphics card's fan....clear that out and you should be OK! Happens to me all the time...
