Time?

I and Nemet Robert started a discussion of "Time" in another thread and because it sorted out to be an interesting, we thought to make a new thread dedicated to this subject.

What exactly is "time"? How about universe before "time"? What exactly are past, future and present?
Just a simple questions to start out the thread. No need to answer them if you don't want to, I'm not looking for a real answer. Just starting a new topic.

Let's start the discussion.

RE: Time?

Well. I don't have an exact idea.

Present = What is basically happening at this exact moment.

Past = What already happened. So sad that you can't change the past.

Future = What is about to happen. This part is in your power. The choices can affect both the present and the past in a certain way.

My initial thoughts.

In more detail? My poor memory chip forgot about the detail.

RE: Time?

But how can you say something is "present" because it's always either in the past or in the future.
After I click 'Post Reply', it's already in the past and my next post is in the future.

That reminds me of the conception of dimensions. A single dimension is a straight line as small as possible without being allowed to move, up, or down lest it enter the second dimension.

With this logic, I'd say that the "present" is an un-measurably small point in time that happens at a single instant, which is impossible to record.

RE: Time?

An idea came to me while sitting in school a few years ago. I began thinking, "if you change something in the past, it could never alter what happens in the present/future. The present/future were determined by the actions already given in the past." If you went back in time and did something crazy, etc, etc, nothing would change when you came back. You had already done it because in the "past", let's say it was present. The people around you had already seen you. You had already done the actions that in the future, you said you were going to change. Nothing would be different when you went back to the present/future.

It may be confusing for some, but simply put, I believe the past is set in stone for what happens in the present/future. Nothing you do in the past will change the outcome of the present/future since, because in reality, you had already been there.

In my opinion, this "Butterfly Effect" theory is completely false.

That's what I wanted to say.

Of course, actions in the past aren't really going to matter, unless they'll affect the future ahead of you.

The future mostly determines how things'll play out, while the present shows how those things are playing out. The past is what played out, how it played out, why, etc.

Quite a complicated topic if you ask me.

RE: Time?

I also understand what you mean Scraper. It's a VERY fine line between an action and the past. What you're saying is the present would only last for what?... 0.0000000000000000000000000.....1 second?

Yes. Basically.

Just a thought, but I'm in the belief that if you could actually go past event horizon, "the point of no return" in space, you can basically live forever (as long as your body will live) because time there doesn't exist?
