Cubemaps/Skyboxes

One of the things I've noticed is that cubemaps (skyboxes) aren't as accessible as they could be. GIMP's cubemap utility doesn't actually work, and apparently Photoshop's utility isn't very intuitive either (I wouldn't know, personally, as I don't have Ps). It seems like a decent idea to get a thread going for cubemaps, similar to the one for models, so that people don't need to spend half an hour downloading utilities to get one made on their own.

I've got two done up already, and can do others on request (I end up doing them manually but it doesn't take that long in GIMP), which are posted below.

Any of the images in "Skies 360" on http://cgtextures.com/ will work, and I'm happy to convert them to usable cubemaps if people don't have the utilities themselves, just post the name. I have an account with CG Textures, so I can download whichever you need.

RE: Cubemaps/Skyboxes

You should post some screenshots so people know what they are downloading. As for skyboxes, it's not too hard making them in photoshop.

Yes it does. I posted a video on the Wiki a while back showing how to do it.

Can you please do one with a daytime sky, with no clouds touching the sun? I do believe I saw one on the skybox texture sight, but I do not know how to do them with GIMP.

The quota resets back to 15MB, I think daily. I have the same type of account.

That's more or less how I'm doing them (though I use the ATI CubeMapGen to make sure they appear as they should). I meant the auto-cubemap utility that would convert them. Basically the utility that was supposed to do what you showed in the video, but without having to do all of the work yourself. It's either incomplete or otherwise nonfunctional, so you have to do them manually.

I have "higher-quality" cubemaps generated by GIMP as well, but they're like 4MB in size which is kind of a lot, considering the quality isn't that different. ATI CubeMapGen works pretty well at keeping filesizes reasonable.

Oh hey, you put in that Night Sky one I had you do Big Grin The little buildings actually look kind of ugly in-game though, so I solved that by adding some trees around the outside area Big Grin

RE: Cubemaps/Skyboxes

I appreciate this! It's a pain to download everything, I tried searching for some cubemaps but there weren't many. This helps a lot of people out greatly I'm sure.
