Looking for ideas for subtle scares

Thread title explains it all.

I'm looking for ideas for subtle scares.

I can handle story driven ones (like as you walk through the library, you hear your father threatening to kill your mom in your head), but not like generic ones...I like scripting events, I'm just not the best when it comes to what they actually do.

Hence, any ideas for scares?
