Penumbra Gold Edition large problem

My friend recently purchased the Penumbra Gold Edition as a gift for me through the Steam client. I installed it without a hitch, and all that great stuff.

There's just one major problem.

Penumbra: Black Plague requires a CD key, well...when Steam checks for the CD key.. it gives me the dreaded "Steam failed to contact key server!".

Requiem runs fine, doesn't seem to require a CD key, though Black Plague does.

I'd really like some help with this...it'd be a shame to see my friend waste her money like that.

If there is anyone who can help me with this problem, or if there is anyone who has information about this, please let me know as soon as possible.
