SOMA freezes at room flood

Just made contact with the girl in the communication room. Place floods, she tells me to head to the shuttle, simon says "oh fuck - what do i do!?" and as the water rises, the screen goes black. It doesn't crash, because I hear the sounds slowly fade away, but then I wait forever and nothing starts up after.

My computer freezes, and only hard restart boots it back up.

List of things I've tried:

>updating drivers
>setting resolution to 640x400, turning off V-sync, textures to low, turning off shadows
>running the game with no background programs
>running the game in windowed mode
