Look for the button labelled 'LT'. That activates the lock to tracking grid feature. This makes your camera move along a plane, designated by the XY, YZ, or XZ button on the very left of the bottom bar. Turning off this option lets you navigate freely in the viewport. You can keep it activated, but to change the direction the camera tracks, activate a different tracking grid by clicking on the XY, YZ, or XZ button. It will change to show which grid is activated.
