Daniel was freaked out because of the shadow hunting him and he believed every word that Alexander said without doubt.He said extracting vitae from people (who are told to be vile and sick but it is implied some of them are not) by torturing them will keep the shadow away. Scared for his life, Daniel began to torture more men and women. So Alexander and his men began to kidnap innocent citizens and they went to a familiy's farm, killed the father, took away mother and daughter to the dungeons. Lucky for her, the girl could escape but Daniel caught and killed her violently in storage. Then, he realized what he has done. He knew that she begged for mercy and she didn't deserve to die... He was on the verge of insanity and he thought drinking amnesia tonic was the only way to forget what he has done before and let a new Daniel born. This new Daniel would be his only chance to forget his sins. That also can be the reason why he has written(in the very beggining of the game) Your Former Self Daniel in Daniel's Note To Self...
