RE: Screenshot criticism thread

So, um, I'm making a library and I thought I should throw in a restoration room somewhere. I was trying to simulate dawn-lighting, but I'm not sure how well I did on that. Anyways, thought I would share something since I've been pretty much inactive since school kicked in again.

Spoiler below!

Kiandra, who are you? Because you just kinda seem like this gift who suddenly descended to gift upon us some wonderful level design and a solid grasp on detail. Smile

Aw, thank you (that's waaaay too kind of you) Smile From what I've seen, you are quite excellent at level design as well!

Just a screenshot from my bedroom. I was gonna make a rainy cloud coloured colour but I can't do that.

The spread of the spotlight coming through the window is too wide - it makes it look like the source of the light is just outside the window. If that light was coming from the sky (or the sun specifically) then the light cast onto the floor would be quite narrow. Try decreasing the FOV on the spotlight

Also, that bedroom is quite large, with a big empty space. Are you planning on placing anything in there?
Because otherwise i'd say you should decrease the size of it.

Trying is the first step to success.

[insert image in spoilers here]

"Rainy Cloud Coloured Colour": try grey-blue, something like... 0.112, 0.165, 0.211 (RGB). If that's too dark, multiply each of those numbers by two (0.224, 0.33, 0.422). Still too dark? Multiply them by 2 again (0.448, 0.66, 0.844). It the colour is too blue for your liking, slide the red and green sliders up, but don't make the red slider go past the blue slider.

Spoiler below!

Speaking of light colours, in case you didn't know:
You can change the colour of a light by clicking the white box beside "Diffuse colour" in the General menu when you have a light selected.

Just saying that because you've used all white lights so far and I wasn't sure if you knew how to change it.

Second, it looks a bit dusty from the foggish/lighting effect yet I see no PS' (which there should be around the light) to demonstrate that, nor are there any cobwebs/dustwebs which would form in that environment.

The roof lights also need a billboard on top of them (halo, no depth) and fiddle around with the halo settings, same with the other windows, they also seem to lack any billboards anyway. Seriously, use them, they're one of your most useful tools! Other than that it look's quite good.

Thanks for the suggestions; they're really useful and I tried to fix it up based on what you said. There are still no particle systems or real decals because the map containing this room is absolutely huge (9 floor map covering a space 20x21 in the X,Z directions) and I want it to be playable on slower computers. (I've noticed decals and PS's tend to eat up memory really quickly). If there's some way of getting around that, please let me know; I miss my dust.

Same as original image angle

Other side of the room and more of the ceiling. I crossed two billboards in an X for each glass panel and halved the brightness of the light they were connected to

Emptiest angle of the room. I'm not quite sure what to do with it so any suggestions would be super awesome.

Emptiest part?
It looks fine! Fill more, and the person living there would not be able to walk towards the desk. Maybe different decals on the floor and the carpets would make it more realistic! Smile
