Lighting a hole in the roof

I'm building a castle in the daytime, and I put a hole in the roof to add some atmosphere and brighten the room a bit, but can't seem to find a proper way to do it. I want a light big enough to brighten the room, but one that won't light up the rafters showing through the hole. Point lights seem a little too fake, but I'd still like a general center to the light that box lights don't really seem to provide. Anyone have any suggestions?

Here are pictures of how much I've gotten done so far:

Use a spotlight, and edit the color to your preference.

I've got a spotlight, but all it does is brighten a patch on the floor. I've tried widening it, but it becomes impractical after a certain point.

Then try using a pointlight with a color set to it.
