People from the 1800's love them some religion, anything pertaining to that could work. Dialogue is a critical part of building up your character (assuming you want them to talk at all); just stay within the time period, and keep it consistent.
I remember when "I don't give a damn" was said in Gone with the Wind all those years ago, and everyone freaked out about it.
ugh.... please don't tell me you are one of those people who does not like things that are in or out of style.

No, no I'm perfectly okay with swear words. I just felt like bringing up Gone with the Wind's case when andy talked about historical correctness.

Honestly I don't even see that as a problem, if I remember correctly in one part of Justine Basile (either him or Alois, I forget which) says "I'll kill you, you cunt!" as one of his idle lines, and to be honest I thought that was very effective.

I'd say it depends heavily on the situation it is used as well as the delivery of the line.

As another example, both "Batman Begins", and "Batman and Robin" had used puns. Mr. Freeze says a ice related joke, and it's silly as hell. However, when Scarecrow says "You need to lighten up" before lighting Batman on fire sounds badass. Why? It's all in the delivery, and situation the line is used. It's very important to keep certain dialogue from sounding campy.

RE: Swearing

I'm really glad you guys wanted to answer me!
Of course i will only swear when the character feels like. Not in every sentence.
I'm still pretty unsure about which year the story is in...
Most of it is in a library and a castle ("No shit Sherlock"), but you control 2 guys in the age between 20 and 30.
In some of the recent notes i said it was 1835... Would that be ok? Or maybe a little bit later...

Awesome post and examples. Although, I don't think it is possible for Arnie to say a joke without it being cringeworthy.

RE: Swearing

Using swear words are inconsequential. It's the execution that matters! I am more emotionally involved in video games like Portal (A game with no swearing) than, lets say, Crysis (A game with lots of swearing).
Also, bear in mind, Profanity used to be a novelty in the past. It was new, edgy, and controversial. But now, it no longer has an impact on emphasis because of how casually it's been used nowadays.

All that profanity can do now...is offend a few people, especially religious people.
I'm not saying you shouldn't have swearing because it might offend a few people, I'm just saying: It won't really help the quality of a CS.

By the way, Amnesia wasn't rated M for violence and profanity (there wasn't much of that in the game) but rather for how scary it was.

RE: Swearing

I guess if someone is being struck with despairing emotions, swearing helps convey that. But in uses not being the former, it can cause some, as previously mentioned, cringe-worthy results.
