Amnesia dark descent vs penumbra black plague

Hello everyone.I will compare these two and give my opinon on Penumbra Overture and Requiem.
+ means good
- means bad.

Penumbra Black Plague:
+scarier looking enemies
-weak enemies
-you are faster than your enemies
-shorter game
+you don't go insane in the dark
+harder puzzles
+ no flashbacks

Amnesia Dark Descent:
-enemies don't look scary
+strong enemies
+you are slower than them
+longer game
-you go insane in the dark
-easier puzzles
-flashbacks

As for the atmosphere both have a great atmoshphere ,i would give the edge to amnesia, and amnesia scared me more than BP so i give the edge in scare to her as well.Overall both games are good and these two games scared me more than any other movie and i'm 24! It's sad they are so underrated and they don't make similar games to this.
Penumbra Overture- Great atmosphere, better than BP and arguably even Amnesia but enemies ruined this game for me.You had weapons and enemies weren't scary.Dogs? Please.Spiders were a very lame adversary.Overall the enemies ruined it for me, i kept waiting for REAL enemies but they never appeared.
Penumbra Requiem-ZERO enemies, purely a puzzle game.It is fun but this doesn't fit into the series and thus it is a huge dissapointment.Worst of all 3 penumbras by far.

RE: Amnesia dark descent vs penumbra black plague

Hello!
Nice comparison, but maybe you should explain your positive and negative points a bit more? For example having "you are faster than your enemies" and "weak enemies" as negative points kinda implies that you see frequent player death as a positive thing. Which is debatable, considering Frictional's design philosophy for horror... Likewise there is no real explanation given for why you see the insanity mechanic as a bad thing. Is it because of the gameplay implications that stem from it? Or the annoying effects?

I think your review could be more helpful to people considering to buy either of the games if you gave reasons for the points you bring up. That way everybody can decide if that's a point he'd find negative as well or if it's a feature that wouldn't bother him Smile

How are these supposed to be cons? Are you sure you preferred Amnesia? Wink

Oh no. Not another one of these threads. xD

People prefer the first game they play, simple as that. So when choosing between Penumbra and Amnesia it all just boils down to whether you like medieval castles or abandoned mines more than the other. Tongue

Enemies from Black Plague look scary, enemies from Overture and Amnesia do not, especially Overture.

Well by weak enemies is they can have multiple attacks on
you and they inflict very little damage while in amnesia 1-2 attacks and your
dead.So Amnesia forces you to be more careful. Yes you can easily outrun
enemies in Black Plague while you cannot in Amnesia.I think the insanity
mechanism was taken from call of cthlulhy: dark corners of the earth game, so
it is not something new.It is annoying, basically a few seconds in the dark and you
start losing it.

Well since i played all 4 i would say BP and Amnesia are
amazing, Amnesia as i mentioned is scarier. Both a must play!! Overture killed
it for me cause you have weapons and you can kill your enemies pretty handily,
therefore ruining the scare effect for me.Still you can play the game to
prepare for much scarier games like BP and Amnesia.Atmosphere in Overture is
"on another level".A true survival horror should not have weapons or
they should be very scarce.Requiem is the worst of all, i think this one
should be avoided..

Yes i give the edge to Amnesia altho it is close. I honestly don't think Machine for pigs will live up to the original.

Well, I was surprised that you classified the flashbacks in the cons... isn't it normal to have flashbacks when you have been struck by amnesia? Wink

I do not understand why you mentioned the insanity... What is so bad about it?

I found BP just a terrifien as ATD
And the fact the story continued where OT ended was great too.

Penumbra Requiem-ZERO enemies,
purely a puzzle game.It is fun but this doesn't fit into the series and
thus it is a huge dissapointment.Worst of all 3 penumbras by far.

this I was completing all those puzzels in a gloomy warehouse.
Too find myself at the end with nothing happend.
I just had to play with allot of balls (You guys know that I don't like playing with others balls)

Btw the controls are a definite + for amnesia since the controlls in Penumbra where a bit stiff.
And you couldn't rotate objects you could just hassle around with them extremely hard to stack stuff together.

As i mentioned ,it was annoying. You can't stay 5 seconds in the dark otherwise you start losing it.Flashbacks were too frequent and it didn't seem to fit in the game.
