Order you should play a game series.

What is the correct order you should play a game series in which a prequel is part of the story?

I actually got the STALKER trilogy. The first game was "Shadow of Chernobyl", the successor was "Clear Sky", but as a prequel in which the story takes place before the first game.

So, is it meant to play the games in order of release date or in order of the story?

Same with Silent Hill. The correct order would be SH 1, 3 and then 2. Because SH 1 and 3 have one connected story while SH 2 has its own story.

How is it meant to play games correctly?

RE: Order you should play a game series.

The way I see it, it's generally best to play games by the order they were released.

Reason being that prequels are most often made after the game they come before, and it's most likely intended that you play them the order they were made. Prequels will often have certain allusions to "future events"that are meant to be picked up by people who have already played the game the game is a prequel to.

Whatever you do, play SoC first! CS is a prequel and it might fill some holes, but don't play it first. I recommend to play in following order: SoC, CoP, CS.

But CoP is the last game, why playing it after SoC?

CoP is the sequel to SoC.

I also recommend playing the games in the order they're released for the reason kreekakon said but also for gameplayreasons; The game that were released first usually have the least mechanics and the least improvements. As a series of games are released the developers will have more experience, better tech and a whole lot of consumer feedback making each installment with better gameplay than the previous. Obviousley this is not always the case but it is often enough.

And CS is the prequel, so normally the order must be: CS, SoC, CoP

Yes, that's the chronological order. However, like I said, it's not recommended to play Clear Sky first.
