That is interesting - why is Steam allowed to set any discount they want? Do they buy game copies in advance like a retail store? I always thought Steam would just offer a sales plattform like ebay.

Can you elaborate on that? I'm curious on how this works.

Steam is the publisher. The publisher sets the price. They could give it away for free if they wanted to.

AFAIK.

I doubt they are allowed to. Tongue

Well, I don't want to know the specifics of their deal with Steam Smile - just the basic method how Steam works. There are only three possibilites, perhaps they can point out which one it is:

1) Steam buys copies like a retail store.

2) Steam buys copies on demand but only pays n% of the original price. If they'd pay i.e. 60% of the retail price they had a margin of 40% for discounts.

3) Steam works like ebay where publishers set the prices and discounts. (Not very likely after what Jens wrote already)

I highly doubt that, but let's add it as a fourth possibility.

It's not a guess. It's a fact.

Need confirmation?

Sorry, Jens' quote does not proof your theory at all. In fact, if Steam was the publisher of the game, FrictionalGames could not add it to other direct download services nor sell it on their own homepage.

So please don't promote something as a fact if you don't know it at all. Just let someone official answer the question.

I don't need to prove my theory, because it's not a theory. Go ahead and ask ValvE.
