Hm... check if your face normals are all pointing the right way or if some are flipped. I heard that Blender displays all polygons as two-sided in its viewport by default, so you can't see flipped polygons there. Hpl on the other hand only displays the "correct" side of a polygon which can create weird holes on models with flipped triangles.

If that's not it, there could be something wrong with the UV layout. Could you post a screenshot of what it looks like in the editor now, after deleting the cache, and of the UV layout?
