Penumbra - Requiem ending/begining?

I know it's kind of a fuzzy sort of thing, But what happened to Philip at the start of Requiem? Was he killed or was he brought that crazy place? Or was it like limbo? I'm not really sure? Also the ending where you end up on the boat, what does it mean? Does he go back home? Please someone explain due to my compulsively wanting to know these things Huh
