Yup. I rarely watch TV so its not often I just put on a film thats just beginning wondering if its good or not. I have a list of films i've been recommended, most films are at least 90 mins long and I always try to watch a film in one sitting so finding 90 mins can be hard at times when i'd rather not risk watching a disappointment.

Same with games, and less so with music as can check out stuff quickly and free.

RE: Excellent movies

I love movies, since my laptop is to shit to play games anymore and I don't have the clover to upgrade yet I've been slowly replacing my gaming with movie watching for the past few years. Picking out a favourite movie is impossible, but I have a few that I absolutely love:
The Wall - based on the album The Wall by Pink Floyd it's the motion picture for the album and it's straight up my alley; filled with strange psychology and pictures, symbolism and freaky stuff all accompanied by the great music from the album.
Other great movies I really enjoy watching are A Clockwork Orange, Intouchables, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Memento, The World's End, Watchmen, The Matrix, LOTR, The Shining, Saw (the first one), Insidious, The Conjuring, Sin City and anything made by Quentin Tarantino. I'm a sucker for Tarantino and enjoy his style in movies a lot. I'm also as you can see weak for some good James Wan movies. They are my two favourite directors/writers. Peter Jackson would have been one of my favourites as well but after what he's doing with the Hobbit I'm extremely disappointed in him :/

Yeah... Honestly I don't think you saw that many Science fiction movies at all...

And A.I is... an alright movie? Honestly I found it to be incredibly inconsistent. Cinematographically speaking it has some nice scenes. But story wise it's a bit dumb if you actually pay attention to what's going on.

The story felt a bit forced and relied too much on the emotional aspect, leaving some huge logical holes in the process (that could have been very easily solved if someone bothered to check the script for flaws).

It's not crap, but I don't think it's all that special.

If you are into artificial intelligence based stories I'd recommend you "Blade Runner", "2001: A space Odyssey" or "Her".

I enjoyed those a hell lot more than A.I.

Am I the only one who thinks A Clockwork Orange is just a curiosity? I thought the movie itself was rather bland and just plain weird, sure the psychological elements were really well presented and it raised a few very good question about psychological treatment and it's ups and downs but at the end of the day it was just a peculiar piece of psychology rather than a good movie to me.

At the time of its release it had a lot more impact. It was banned for many years here in the UK.

Like most sci-fi films, they hack into what is happening in society at the time , whether or not the film is set in the present or future. A Clockwork Orange came out at such a time where teenagers were feared a lot. Look up Stanley Cohen's book 'Folk Devils and Moral Panics'. Alex and his Droogs are pretty much representing the teens in the media at the time, but stylistically set in a teenage dystopia.

You can dwell/masturbate to all these reasons as to why the film is great to someone who agrees on why, or you can simply disagree and say nah you're just looking for reasons or that its pretentious. Thats totally up to the individual, but thats one reason as to why the film is admired.

As somebody who puts aesthetics in the forefront always, and considers this type of subtext as secondary (not necessarily superfluous though,) I can say I genuinely think it is a great film. I love this type of dry black humor, the irony being punctuated by the incongruous soundtrack (which is pretty awesome.) Seeing as it is a Kubrick movie it is wonderfully directed with careful, borderline (or not even) obsessive attention to detail, fantastically shot and with great performances from McDowell and the old guy in particular, though almost everybody is good. Don't really know what else to say - I do like it and I personally despise pretentious "artistic" appraisal of art that ignores the artistic aspect.

The movie is definitely bizarre though, although I don't really see how that is a bad thing. Several people including Davids Lynch and Cronenberg have built a career on that niche.

I still don't get Eraserhead. Mulholland Drive was easier to understand.
