Cannot run Penumbra in Debian 4.3.2-1.1
Hey all! I just bought Penumbra for Linux to run on my Debian machine (DreamLinux). Anyhow, the install went fine but when I go to run any of the games in the trillogy, the screen flashes black for a split second and then returns to the desktop. Any suggestions?

Slugzzz

P.S.

When I look at the hpl.log file for Requiem I get

Init low level graphics
Setting video mode: 800 x 600 - 32 bpp
ERROR: Could not set display mode setting a lower one!
FATAL ERROR: Unable to initialize display

Hi,

What computer specifications do you have? Mainly what graphics card? Do you have proper drivers installed for it with full 3D support?

The first time I played the game I changed in the menu the resolution in-game to 1600x1200, and when I restarted the game I had a similar problem, blank screen and return to desktop (or even frozen game). My desktop resolution were 1024x768, and when I changed this resolution to 1600x1200 (the same resolution I've set the Penumbra games) I played without problems in Ubuntu 9.10 64 bits.

If you haven't solved your problem, try to change your desktop resolution. It worked for me. Good luck!

Well, now I have switched to Ubuntu... same issue. Here's my specs on the graphics card:
nVidia Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300] (rev a1)

"The first time I played the game I changed in the menu the resolution in-game to 1600x1200, and when I restarted the game I had a similar problem, blank screen and return to desktop (or even frozen game). Tried that... no dice.

Thanks, though.

Make sure to install drivers for the card, in Ubuntu you should be asked to do it after the initial install when first login in to the system. Or use the Hardware Drivers program to do it manually.

If you have done that and it keeps crashing, it could be that you need to change the resolution the game tries to use. Go to ~/PenumbraCollection/Overture/config/ and edit default_settings.cfg so that the line <Screen Width="800" Height="600" FullScreen="true" Vsync="false" /> has a Width="" and Height="" you know your computer can run. I am assuming that the game has always crashed on launch, so that you do not have a folder called .frictionalgames/Penumbra/Overture/ with a settings.cfg file in it, if you do you have to edit that settings.cfg file instead.

I am fairly certain the proper drivers are installed... and when I go to launch it does change the resolution of the screen... but then nothing else.
