What's the bucket of water for?

I found a wooden bucket after the prison and used it on the well to collect water. Not finding a use for a bucket of water I used it again on another well and it got eaten. Is there a point to the bucket of water or is just a red herring?

Um no I dont think there is since I didnt need to use it.

If you used the bucket of water on another well, how did you get out of the room?
Since, that bucked it used to get key from the vents which opens the door to further... at least that's what I did.
