Full Version: When should I look for voice actors?

One of the biggest criticisms (even leading to a few 1-3 star scores) of my first CS was the lack of voice acting. I definitely want to use voice acting for my next one, and I have 2 people in mind I want to seek out, but I'm trying to decide when I should start hiring (Figuratively, I don't think I'll be able to pay anyone). If I wait till I'm fully done, then I'll end up having to wait longer to find people and let them record their lines, but if I do it too soon I risk someone recording some lines that I then decide to change, forcing them to re-record.

Can I get some thoughts?
Last step, imo, DeAngelo. =D
It's better to have it complete and neat before it reaches the voice actors.
What are you working on? =P

A small custom story that bridges the gap between my first one and my next one. I'm going small this time because I know SOMA comes out relatively soon and I think I want to wait for that to work on a new one (Plus from what I've seen of SOMA the assets will compliment what I have planned for my next one better than the Amnesia assets. )

I'm also thinking of learning a new engine such as Unity or Cry Engine.
do a long custom story because its coming out on 2015

ppl would still play amnesia cs when soma comes out or
will they stop playing amnesia and play soma cs

lp mine plz
Doubt many will continue to play Amnesia CS' unless backwards compatibility is assured.

It's been about a year since I released mine. If I did a long one it'd be about another year. Even if I decide to do another long amnesia one, I still want to do this smaller one to bridge the gap. I'll LP yours when I get a chance Smile
maybe

my cs has the video tool

did u download the patch for the level editor in this thread this is the patch to let machine for pigs stuff to be in amnesia the dark descent

Well, as for voice actors, it depends on what you're doing. For mine, I'm building the mod around the script/dialogue, where most people usually do it the other way around. I've gone through the script so much before sending it out to my actors that I know there will be very minimal changes (and changes are generally inevitable).

Typically though, you should save it for the last step. It can also be more helpful for the voice actors to see what environment their voice will appear in and will allow them to make decisions on the approach they should take with their given character.

When I worked with Chronogyros for Emma's Nightmare, he let me see the level where my character would show up and explained his goal for that level and character, which let me know exactly what he wanted from my performance. Seriously, it was one of the best meetings I've ever had with a director.
or u should just do message on the screen instead of voice

You could. It depends on what the creator of the mod want's to accomplish. For some stories, no voices might be more effective.
