Really thought last december was going to be its glorious release, right around winter.

Yes it is. In Extremo plays folk metal.
I also found it via Gothic series few years back, when I saw a parody video of Gothic II.
Yeah, the developers of Gothic seems to be fans of In Extremo.
Unearthlybrutal, if you wanted to take a glance about Gothic, you will see one of the quests when watching first 5 minutes here. The game is really epic, same unique masterpiece like Penumbra & Amnesia are. It's not a normal RPG, it's more an own genre. Very atmospheric and even a bit scary.
Gothic is 11 years old now, but its still one of the best games in the universe!
As Scraper mentioned, Gothic II (direct sequel) is also very popular.
It's not a superhero fight blood splatter RPG, it's story and atmposphere based like we know it from Frictional Games, a game with special style.
Back to metal music. As I already said a while ago, I really don't like it, but there are some little songs, I really enjoy. Like In Extremo in Gothic or some songs of Nightwish. This here may isn't hardcore metal, but it's a metal band and this song is really nice:
Beautiful song by Finnish band called "Viikate" ("scythe" in English).
I think that its more like rock than metal.
