The Unbirth Challenge

I have the following problem when trying to play, it goes to the menu and then quits with the message that it couldn't load a sound file. The sound file is present, so i think that may be a red herring?

Does anyone have any ideas? Using xp service pack 3 and radeon x1950 pro. If i remember, there were problems with the penumbra tech demo on ati cards, could this be similar?
