He then tried to construct a way to replicate the way he came through (he references a Traveler's Watch or something similar) using human technology (there's a note in the Control Room at the cistern of Alexander complaining about steam technology being huge and unwieldy). So, Alexander came from the same world as the Kaernk, and he managed to try to get back once before with the help of Agrippa and Weyer. Only Weyer went through instead of Alexander (there are a few notes of Alexander yelling at someone else who went through the portal without him). Alexander's memory cylinders constantly talk of getting back to his love (I think it means he left someone behind in his own world, that he's trying to get back to).

Anyway, Alexander came to our world, and tried to invent a way back by kidnapping people in the woods, and turning some of them into the Gatherers (the first victims were the Deserters, starting the legend in the nearby town), while using others to harvest the vitae, an energy generated by terror (There's a note in the tortured dog room about how only humans generate enough of it).

So, Alexander needed an Orb, Vitae, and a complicated steam-powered contraption based on the designs from an alien world. He used the Gatherers to construct the machine, the prisoners to create vitae, and Daniel to get an orb and hold off the shadow long enough to get home. (That's why there's a note about Alexander regretting that he has to abandon Daniel, the same way Weyer/Agrippa did to him).

So, the Kaernk is a creature from Alexander's world- The Gatherers are creatures made by Alexander to construct the machine- The shadow is a Guardian of the orbs on Earth.

As far as the men in the Wine Cellar, I always thought that Alexander mixed the potion that 'reacted explosively with organic matter' in with the wine, causing the men's stomachs to explode. He does say in one of the notes in the archives that something along the lines of "maybe I can use this setback to deal with my other problem," which I inferred to mean using the failed potion to get rid of Wilheim before Wilheim reported him.

The reason Alexander used Wilheim is because Humans are smarter than Gatherers, which are mindless brutes. He only used Gatherers because they don't ask questions.

he didn't leave his world voluntarily, he was kicked out for some reason or another.

RE: Monsters origin?

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS!*

I agree with your hypothesis; that seems to be the most likely explanation for the gatherers' origin.

Another possibility is that the gatherers are what Tibetan mystics call a 'tulpa', which are physical manifestations of one's thoughts or, in this case, Daniel's own fears and paranoia. Remember the nightmares that he was having? The Orb's, and possibly the Shadow's, influence may have allowed Daniels nightmares to take on physical form.

This could also explain why the Gatherers seem to vanish at points in the game like when they wander (or shamble Big Grin) into an adjacent room or down a dark hallway, because they are just physical projections of Daniels eroding sanity.

They could also be a product of Alexander's own twisted mind, via the Orb, since he mentioned 'creating more servants'.

The water monster, according to the journals, is a creature native to Alexander's home planet or dimension.

See this link: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/tulpa

The first monster looks like he has hands with knife sharp things as fingers and you can see his face has some kinda flesh mask.
The Second stronger monster is made by more machine parts with cutting blades as arms his face is ripped apart so it has no face but you can again see it is creation of flesh and machine nailed together.

The watermonster is some sort of dark spirit i think it's a creation from the shadow (that's why you can't see him)

RE: Monsters origin?

Well, this is to do with an earlier post, someone said something about the grunt's body ripped in half by the shadow, in reality, it was sliced in half by a brute, as a way to demonstrate its power and make you grab a new pair of pants. You know how we were all OMFG GRUNT! NOOOOO! Well the brute kicks the grunt in the non existent pants, that's what that is trying to get across. At least I think it is, if not, well, good try?

Freaky monster appears not out entirely of ordinary. Lately it is very calm at Alexander and I am unsure what so? Anyway better organisms tough if durable, through circumstance many. Feeling good bout theories accepted inside. What you consider worthwhile? Nothing is good but bad to me example so tell us so!

RE: Monsters origin?

In the Old Archives, there is some folklore and interesting notes that propose an origin of the grunts.

According to local folklore, there are "Gatherers" (grunts) who patrol the woods around Brennenburg castle and abduct anyone who is unlucky enough to get lost in the forest. The same folklore suggests that the "Gatherers" are deserters from the Thirty Years War who got lost in the forest and were cursed to roam it forever.

In the same room where you find this note, you can find another note written by Alexander himself that goes something like this:

"I must deal with Wilhelm and his men. They have been drawing the public attention to my operations here at Brennenburg, and their patrols in the forest have been killing my servants. Perhaps I can end their lives without fuss tonight in the wine cellar."

Seems to me the monsters are very real and Alexander has complete control over them. They are his servants.
