What's the f10 Bios setup thing?

when the computer boots, while it shows the HP logo, you need to press F10 in order to enter the bios setup menu.

It didn't work.
But for some reason, i watched the intro again, played the game and it worked! when I didn't, it gave me the BSOD. I am at the part where you find the cd in the beginning of the game, where you use the sparks to ignite that flaming barrel. I have gone into the sewers, but when i did,
The game crashed.

why didn't it work? It should, otherwise the game won't play properly.
