How I see it Andy:
Horror: Relates to terrifying situations and horror aspects, such as gore, supernatural, or le spooks in general. Horror can be applied to many things, but it does not necessarily mean it has to be scary. For example. I think the movie Nightmare Before Christmas is horror, but it is not necessary going to scare you. It simply has horror-related aspects. I believe this also applies to Binding of Isaac, Left 4 Dead, DayZ, Killing Floor, Alan Wake, and so on.

Scary: What causes fear. Of course it is usually horror related, but it does not apply to necessarily EVERY horror genre. Scariness is also dependent on the person. I've heard people thought Left 4 Dead was scary. While that's absurd t others, it may not be for them. Scariness is a dependent factor while horror is not. Scary is what plays with a person's mind. Games and movies such as: Amnesia, Penumbra, Paranormal Activity, Dead Space 1, Slender, and so on. But what I listed may not be a title you agree with. This is where the dependent factor comes in. You may not say they are SCARY to you, but are they not horror genres?

I'd say Left 4 Dead is actually more of a comedy game than a horror game. I have so much fun laughing when I'm playing it.

No, I'm not being sarcastic. It really is funny to me. Even several major video game medias have discussed its comedic level.

It is funny at times, I agree. It's a fun game. Have you ever played it by yourself on mutations such as Last Man Standing or Lone Gunman? Walk in dark areas and listen to the ambiance. The game has the potential to be a really creepy game.

Even though it does have potential, I don't think Valve would want to do that for the core game experience. Given their love of cooperative multiplayer, going "laugh your stomach out" mode is going to be way more fun, and successful than trying to turn it into a scary survival horror.

Frankly, I wouldn't be happy, and be having so much fun with Left 4 Dead if it wasn't so hilariously fun. Left 4 Dead has no need to be a creepy game.

Agreed. And there has been scary mods made for it. Trust me, I like how valve has made it so fun, I'm just saying. Some retextures have made the specials much more disturbing.

It's good for people who want to feel something different for their game that not everyone may like.

By dictionary (Merriam-Webster) definition:

Horror - feeling of intense fear, dread, or dismay (or something that causes it)
Scary - causing fear

With that said, horror is just as arbitrary as scary. Both are causes of fear, which is why I said previously that they can be used interchangeably.
