He can't. It is assumed there is another way out. Check Post #7. However it is assumed he is a (in the 19 century, of course.)30's Spiderman.

Well you see him walk through the previous levels including the nave, the sewers, cellar_maze and finally the entrance hall.

Guess there is another way to get back up maybe he can go back because parts of the wall are torn apart by the shadow once he leaves.

The shadow provoked a cave-in in the elevator shaft. Maybe when it withdrew, it somehow cleared the passage?

RE: Great concepts but many loose ends.

Perhaps he fixed the elevator by throwing a rock at it.

What? It worked for 50% of the puzzles in the game. Chuck a rock at it! The puzzles were really difficult for me because I kept thinking it required a more difficult solution than chucking a rock at it, or pulling a lever multiple times, or throwing over a piece of wood. Games conditioned me to make the simple logic in this game inconceivable!

Anyway it seemed pretty obvious to me on first playthrough that the red mist and putrid wall meat was the Shadow, but maybe because I carefully read every note. I think it was Weyer who had a diary detailing that he found a note and got chased by red mist, and even one of Daniel's spoken diaries described that the Shadow manifested itself as pulsating red flesh - the one where he and Alexander realize the Shadow is much closer than they appear.

What bothers me more is that the mixture could dissolve the tissue leading to the refinery but not tissue on the giant gate to the outside so I could leave.

But then the shadow would've caught and killed you.

Nope it was after Alexander it wouldn't care.(I don't see why it would atleast)
But you were there for a reason you chose to forget so that you could stop Alexander without going crazy about torturing everything on your path making you emotionally weak.

But if you stay in the prison cell it will catch and kill you.

RE: Great concepts but many loose ends.

The Shadow was after Daniel - it is in fact the only reason Daniel was in Brennenburg in the first place.

Actually, I got the idea that particular ending might have been hallucination due to the elevator problem and the fact that the shadow stops following him. The shadow never seemed to care before, why would it care if you gave it Alexander? Between fixing Weyer's orb and already being chased over your own orb it seems unlikely that the shadow will just give up.

As for dissolving the stuff on the gate instead of towards the refinery, how much do you think Daniel believes about this odd Castle he just woke up in? I bet he's thinking "screw this shit, I'm making a run for it" and it's a bit of an immersion breaker that he can remove the red tissue in one spot and not in another. Of course in that Amnesia development interview they mentioned that they were unhappy about that and it's a holdover from an older design, so makes sense.
