Hopefully. This forum is a bit crowded, but at least not that of Facebook's. It's just outrageous. I mean it's just a joke. Does the Police doesn't detect jokes? If I were 18 I'll sign that Petition right away!

I only see 8 years as being "too much." I wouldn't have given more than 2 to 3 months.
It doesn`t matter if he actually planned something or not. He probably will be abused by the government as a cheap example to keep others in check.

That said, if they do sentence him to anything it should be to work in an aid agency for a few weeks.
