I'll add some of your elements, to my elements, but the descrption I thought would be this:

Spoiler below!
Robert wakes up from the streets of his home town stunned, noticing something he hardly expected. The blocks are dark from lights, roads silent from traffic and walkways empty from pedestrians. The only things that appear to keep noise among this omnious silence, are the blowing wind and crisping leaves of vegetation around him.
A long time has passed and unnoticed; the town seems abandoned, left alone with its own luck, with questions, which can be only answered by going deeper to the darkness, by exploring the familiar and finding the leads for the unfamiliar...

I think this should start in the afternoon. And I'm not sure if freeways already invented in the 1900's (Cars have been invented).
Okay, now I have someone to cooperate with the plot, throw me ideas and I'll think them further. But I think the roots could be like what I've already told. It's more unique and even more mysterious way to start.

About the cars, what do you mean by them? I was thinking this to be based around 1850 - 1900, there was cars but they were quite rare, only more wealthy people had them. The horse was still the way to go for most people.

I don't think freeways are already there in 1900. Well I guess regular roads will suffice.
Indeed, there was roads before cars, for the horse traffic, for instance.
Red, I like that exposition, it's really cool :D

Especially since it's something within my ability to do >.> that's kind of important :p as for the whole body of water thing, I have a river planned; will that do?

So that bridge-picture you made once... That's going to be in it? Big Grin
No, I mean yes, definitely.

Something similar, yes - with less lag though of course :p
So are we just doing mystery and not horror? Cause I was going to make a boarded up house with a "ghost" in it. It'd just be stuff moving around when you're not looking and breathing sounds around corners. I promise it won't be "the suit of armor was there but now it's LOOKING AT YOU OOH SPOOKY"
