Well, it's a section of the Carta marina, depicting a Maelstrom near Norway. That matches the whirlpool in the jigsaw image.

So they posted an old map showing the coastline of norway..?

That thing in the top left corner looks like that fish puzzled together btw.

Maybe it has something to do with the definition of "whirlpool" itself (in case its related to some pattern based on letters, it was a possibility)
Curious.

Some posters on 4chan were using the first letter of each image to piece together a code. Maybe Frictional is telling us that #6 is a Maelstrom ("M") and not a whirlpool ("W")?

EDIT: Here's the most recent (currently frozen) /v/ thread, and here's the neogaf thread.

Does this mean that frictional were reading 4chan all along?

That's awesome.
Let's post here too, because... why not?

I think they may be trying to tell us some info from the image (maybe the whirlpool/maelstrom) is redundant and not usable.

Code:
> locate chr2img protocol

This alludes to the fact that we may be working with a char corresponding to each image.

Code:
> data clean up start
processing...
> redundant c2i protocol data found

This would mean some c2i (char2img) data is redundant, with an image similar to one of the eight we have below.

Edit:

Also, since people were interested in this kind of thing yesterday, the description near the maelstrom reads something like: "Here is the horrible Charybdis"
Charybdis was a whirlpool thought by Greeks to be a sea monster.

Actually that makes sense
