Where did the machine come from? Did Oswald build the machine? Was it already there / Did his father build it?
I personally think he inherited the factory and run it like any other industrial tycoon. Somehow I think the machine isn't necessary something any one has physically built. One of the taglines goes "This world is a machine.. etc" I think it may refer to the world Oswald wakes up to. Not the one he was born to. I also think the pics we have seen so far are the mildest (beginning of the game), and there is much more gruesome stuff ahead.
Of course there is the old theory that Oswald's went insane and he built the machine for himself and because of amnesia doesn't remember it. But that is kinda close to "certain previous plot" and there are so many other things going on.
